China’s shipbuilding industry has kept its leadership in the global market last year as busy maritime transportation operations have increased the demand for newly-built vessels.
The country’s naval production totaled 39.7 million tons of deadweight in 2021, rising 3% annually, data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology showed.
The output represented 47.2% of the world total, an increase of 4.1 percentage points compared to 2020, the ministry said.
New shipbuilding orders, another leading industry indicator, rose 131.8% year-on-year in 2021 to 67.07 million deadweight tonnes, representing 53.8% of the global market share.
Order retention volumes reached 95.84 million deadweight tonnes at the end of December last year, up 34.8% from the end of 2020 and taking a 47.6% share of the global market.
The Ministry also said that the international competitiveness of Chinese shipbuilding companies has further increased in 2021, with six companies ranking among the top 10 shipbuilders in the world in terms of production, new orders, and deliveries.
