The grain harvest should reach 262.13 million tons in the period 2020/2021, according to the 9th Grain Crop Survey, released on Thursday, June 10, by CONAB (the national supply company).
Despite the drop of 9.57 million tons compared to the previous month’s estimate, the total volume to be harvested is still higher than in the past season. According to CONAB, adverse weather conditions recorded during the cultivation of the second crop affected crop yield estimates.
The corn yield should be lower given the low occurrence of rain between the months of April and May. With this, the estimate is that the total cereal production will reach 96.4 million tons, with 24.7 million tons in the first harvest, 69.9 million in the second, and 1.7 million in the third, a reduction of 6 % on the total 2019/20 production. According to CONAB, the expected drop is mainly due to the delay in the soybean harvest and, as a result, the planting of a large part of the corn second crop area outside the indicated window.
Soybean production is setting a new record, estimated at 135.86 million tons, 8.8% higher than the 2019/20 crop production, which represents an increase of 11 million tons.
For beans, CONAB expects the harvest to remain close to 3 million tons. Rice has an estimated production of 11.6 million tons, an increase of 4% compared to the volume produced in the previous harvest.
In the case of winter crops, planting started in April and intensified in May. Preliminary estimates for wheat show a planted area of 2.5 million hectares and production of 6.94 million tons.
