Container operations, soybeans, and fertilizers were the main goods handled at the Port of Santos in October. At 412,600 TEU, containerized cargo grew 7.5% in the month, raising the YTD to 4.0 million TEU to maintain a double-digit growth (18.3%), records for both the month and the YTD period.
Exports of soybeans reached 218,200 tons, a surprise since shipments normally end in October as they did in 2020. Fertilizer imports remain heated, totaling 724,900 tons in the month, a growth of 12.8%, reaching 6.5 million tons YTD.
The drops in exports of sugar (44.7%) and corn (33.5%) were responsible for the handling decrease in October. The month totaled 10.7 million tons, a reduction of 14% compared to October 2020. Exports decreased by 19.6% and imports decreased by 0.8%.
YTD handling reached 123.6 million tons, an increase of 0.8% over that registered in this period of last year, maintaining itself as the highest handling ever registered for the period. Imports grew 12.9%, totaling 36.4 million tons. Exports, on the other hand, decreased by 3.5%, reaching 87.2 million tons.
Year-to-date, bulk soybean shipments registered a growth of 5.1%, totaling 22.1 million tons, and meat exports also remained high, with a growth of 4.1%, to 1 .4 million tons. Also noteworthy were increasing shipments of citrus juices (13.8%), fuel oil (26.4%), and diesel (32.2%), as well as fertilizer imports (26.6 %).
